This Liberty ship was named
for Charles Carroll (1737-1832)
Charles Carroll was a Maryland planter, politician and Founding Father of the
United States. Carroll was a Maryland delegate to the Continental Congress and
Confederation Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence. Carroll
served as a U.S. Senator from Maryland from 1789-1792. Carroll largely retired
from public life in 1801, but helped create the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in
1827. Carroll was the last surviving signatory of the Declaration of
Independence.
