This Liberty ship was named for Alanson B. Houghton (1863-1941). Alanson Bigelow Houghton was an industrialist, politician, and diplomat. Houghton served as the president of Corning Glass Works, was a Member of the  U.S. House of Representatives from New York from 1919-1922, and the  U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1925-1929.
