Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for Charles M. Schwab (1862-1939). Charles Michael Schwab was a businessman and steel company executive. Schwab was the president of Carnegie Steel from 1897-1901, president of U.S. Steel 1901-1903, and president of Bethlehem Steel from 1904-1916. Schwab was instrumental in building up the town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and turning Bethlehem Steel into one of the largest steel producing companies in the world. During World War I Schwab served as the Director General of the Emergency Fleet Corporation in 1918 and played a large role in improving the government's shipbuilding operation.
