This Liberty ship was named for Lewis Cass (1782-1866). Lewis Cass was a U.S. Army officer, politician, and statesman. During the War of 1812 Cass served as an officer in the U.S. Army and reached the rank of brigadier general. Cass was the Territorial Governor of Michigan from 1813-1831, Secretary of War from 1831-1836, U.S. Ambassador to France 1836-1842, U.S. Senator from Michigan from 1845-1848 and from 1849-1857, and Secretary of State from 1857-1860.
