Historical Narrative

This Liberty ship was named for Christy Mathewson (1880-1925). Christopher "Christy" Mathewson was Major League Baseball pitcher from Pennsylvania.  Mathewson is regarded as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, and was one of the first inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mathewson served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War I. His exposure to chemical weapons in a training accident led to his development of tuberculosis, of which he died in 1925.

MARAD has no written history for the Liberty ship Christy Mathewson at this time.
