This Liberty ship was named for Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809). Meriwether Lewis was an explorer, soldier, and politician. Lewis is most well known as the co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific Northwest in the early 19th century. Lewis served as the Governor of the Louisiana Territory from 1807-1809.
