Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for Edward Livingston (1764-1836). Edward Livingston was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. Livingston was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York from 1795-1801, Mayor of New York City from 1801-1803, a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Louisiana from 1823-1829, U.S. Senator from Louisiana from 1829-1831, U.S. Secretary of State from 1831-1833, and Minister to France from 1833-1835. Livingston is also known for his role in drafting the Louisiana Civil Code of 1825.
