Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for Edward N. Hurley (1864-1933). Edward Nash Hurley was an American businessman and Chairman of the U.S. Shipping Board. Hurley was involved in several businesses, the most successful of which was the Hurley Machine Company. Hurley served as Chairman of the U.S. Shipping Board from 1917-1919 and played a large role in expanding and improving U.S. merchant shipping to support the U.S. war effort during World War I.
