This Liberty ship was named
for Elmer A. Sperry (1860-1930). Elmer Ambrose Sperry, Jr. was an engineer, inventor, and businessman. Sperry was the co-inventor of the gyrocompass and founder of the Sperry Gyroscope Company. Sperry's gyrocompasses were especially useful to nautical and aerial navigation and utilized heavily by the U.S. military.
