Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for George Walton (1741-1804). George Walton was a lawyer, soldier, politician, and Founding Father of the United States. Walton was a Georgia delegate to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence. Walton served as an officer in the Georgia Militia and was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Savannah in 1778. Walton served as Governor of Georgia from 1779-1780 and again from 1789-1790, and U.S. Senator from Georgia from 1795-1796.
