Historical Narrative



USS (AS-32) was the second ship of the two-ship -class submarine tenders.  It was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and commissioned on September 7, 1963. enjoyed a long and varied career servicing Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN) and Fast Attack Submarines (SSN) at all of the major submarine bases in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. The vessel was also forward deployed to the Indian Ocean at Diego Garcia in 1983. was present in Charleston, South Carolina during Hurricane Hugo and assisted in the massive clean-up following that storm, for which the ship and crew received a Humanitarian Service Medal.  ’s last deployment was to Guam from 1992 to 1996.  was relieved by the USS (AS-40), and transited to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington where it was was sold for dismantlement and departed the fleet on July 10, 2013.USS is named for John Philip Holland, the man who developed the first true submarine accepted by U.S. Navy.
