This Liberty ship was named for John C. Calhoun (1782-1850). John Caldwell Calhoun was a prominent lawyer, statesman, and political philosopher from South Carolina. Calhoun served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina from 1811-1817, Secretary of War from 1817-1825, Vice President of the U.S. from 1825-1832, U.S. Senator from South Carolina from 1832-1843 and again from 1845-1850, and as Secretary of State from 1844-1845.
