This Liberty ship was named for John C. Fremont (1813-1890). John Charles Fremont was an explorer, soldier, and politician. Fremont is a prominent figure in the history of the American Southwest and California. Fremont served as a U.S. Senator from California from 1850-1851, and as Territorial Governor of Arizona from 1878-1881. He was an unsuccessful candidate for President of the United States in the 1856 election.
