This Liberty ship was named
for Robert F. Hoke
(1837-1912). Robert Frederick Hoke was a soldier, businessman, and railroad
executive. Hoke served as an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil
War, rising to the rank of major general. After the war Hoke was involved in
several different businesses and was the director of the North Carolina
Railroad from 1893-1912.
