Historical Narrative



This Liberty ship was named for Cardinal Gibbons (1834-1921). James Gibbons was an American Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. Gibbons was the Bishop of Richmond, Virginia from 1872-1877, and the Archbishop of Baltimore, Maryland from 1877-1921. In 1886 became the second American to be made a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.
