This Liberty ship was named for James W. Denver (1817-1892). James William Denver was a lawyer, soldier, and politician. Denver was a U.S. Army officer during the Mexican-American War and was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. Denver served as Territorial Governor of Kansas from 1857-1858, and was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1855-1857.
