This Liberty ship was named for Martin Van Buren (1782-1862). Martin Van Buren was a politician and the eighth President of the United States.  Van Buren held a number of offices including U.S. Senator from New York from 1821-1828, Governor of New York in 1829, U.S. Secretary of State from 1829-1831, U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom from 1831-1832, Vice President of the U.S. from 1833-1837, and President of the U.S. from 1836-1840.
