This Liberty ship was named for Matt W. Ransom (1826-1904). Matt Whitaker Ransom was a soldier and politician. Ransom was as an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, rising to the rank of brigadier general. After the Civil War Ransom served as a U.S. Senator from North Carolina from 1873-1895, and as the U.S. Minister to Mexico from 1895-1897.
