This Liberty ship was named
for Adolph Sutro (1830-1898). Adolph
Sutro was a German-American mining engineer, philanthropist, and politician.
Sutro made a fortune through his engineering involvements in the Comstock Lode
and later served as the Mayor of San Francisco from 1895-1897. Many landmarks
in San Francisco still bear his name.
